| SUMMER PROGRAM STAFF
Summer Program instructors include area public and private school teachers as well as undergraduate and graduate students at leading universities.
They have unique backgrounds and experience in their subject areas. Please read the
biographies of our 2008 staff below. This page will be updated as more information becomes available.
Administration
Jennifer Nossal – Director
Jennifer Nossal earned a B.A. in Psychology from Miami University and a M.A. in Education and Human Development from The George Washington University. As a National Certified Counselor, Jennifer has provided counseling services and human resources consulting to a variety of organizations in the Washington D.C. area.
Her responsibilities at Fairfax Collegiate include managing all programs, hiring staff, and assessing the
needs of students. She has taught both the Math Strength Training and Essay Writing for SSAT and T.J. Exams courses in past summer programs.
Mark Terry - Location Director for Falls Church
Mark Terry is a graduate of the University of California where he studied biology,
political science, and history. He has taught and served in leadership positions in
the Fairfax Collegiate Summer Enrichment Program for the last ten years.
During the school year, he works as a tutor for Fairfax Collegiate.
Jen Guzman - Location Director for Herndon
Jen Guzman has a diverse background of teaching experiences, from tutoring grade school aged children to teaching an undergraduate seminar in political science her senior year of college. She is currently an instructor for SCORE! Educational Centers, in Reston, VA, where she teaches reading, math, and writing.
Jen received an undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and an MBA from University of Oregon Lundquist School of Business. Besides teaching, her other career interests are entrepreneurship, specifically writing business plans for start-up companies, and working to help create microlending programs in developing nations.
She is the mother of two boys, Noah (5) and Asher (3). When she is not teaching, writing business plans or chasing around her kids, she loves to read, play sports and spend time with her husband. This is her second year working in the summer program.
Twila Johnson - Associate Location Director for Falls Church and Writing Instructor
Twila Johnson teaches English Composition, Introduction to Creative Writing, and Reading and Writing About
Texts at George Mason University, where she will receive her M.F.A. in Creative Fiction Writing in May 2008.
While a student at Oklahoma Baptist University, she won fiction, poetry, and acting awards before
earning a B.A. in English, magna cum laude, with minors in Creative Writing and Theatre.
Her short stories have appeared in Scriblerus and Alchemy, and she is currently completing her first novel, The Gospel According to Grandma Moses. An avid believer in giving students individual attention, she has applied her professional acting background towards creatively tutoring children, teens, and adults in writing across the disciplines. This is Twila’s first year with Fairfax Collegiate; in addition to serving as Associate Location Director for Falls Church, she will be teaching Creative Writing, Writing Skills,
and Reading and Writing for Meaning.
Joelle Tybon - Associate Location Director for Falls Church and Writing Instructor
Joelle Tybon just finished her Masters in
Literature at American University in Washington, DC. She hails from
the other Washington, the Tacoma area to be exact, and earned her B.A.
in English and History at a small liberal arts school in Oregon. Once
she finished her B.A., Joelle spent two years teaching English in
France and hopes to return again this coming fall.
Among other things, Joelle has worked as a camp counselor, a French
teacher, a Writing Center consultant, and a tour guide in Paris for
American high school kids. Joelle plans
to pursue her doctorate in English Literature or move to France. This is her second year returning to Fairfax Collegiate.
Computer Fluency, Programming, and Robotics
Mike Bradshaw
Mike Bradshaw is a rising third year Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia, majoring in Political Philosophy, Policy, and Law. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2006, where he was a member of the varsity track and cross-country teams all four years. At UVA, he is an active member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, a recreation facility supervisor, and a member of the Student Council Legislative Affairs Committee. Although this will be his first summer working with Fairfax Collegiate, previously he has worked as an instructional assistant at SCORE! Educational
Centers and as an Information Technology intern.
