The Student Filmmaking Program

Our unique DV (Digital Video) Filmmaking Program teaches students to implement the techniques and strategies needed for every stage of film production. Designed to simulate a real-world professional production company, our program consists of several classes that immerse students in the art and science of filmmaking. Young filmmakers learn valuable skills in creative collaboration, visualizing a written idea, meeting deadlines and team goals, and becoming more fluent creators of media.

The DV Filmmaking course gives students an introductory overview of the entire filmmaking process. The DV Scriptwriting, Production, Acting, and Editing classes enable students to develop and refine specialized skills.

Your Journey as a Young Filmmaker

Begin your journey as a filmmaker by engaging in brainstorming and outlining your ideas. You'll learn how to write and pitch a short treatment to the class. The group selects the most engaging and viable production ideas that will become complete screenplays.

Practice important production management skills by breaking down screenplays into scenes and production elements such as actors, locations, props, and costumes. Draft storyboards that describe the visual language of the film and create a "shot list" of all the camera setups that are needed at each location to tell the story.

Work as a member of a professional film crew by selecting locations and training in the use of camera, sound, and lighting equipment. After casting from among your peers, rehearse and shoot scripts one scene at a time. At Fairfax Collegiate, students experience every aspect of the production and creative process by rotating in their roles as actors, script supervisors, directors, camera operators, lighting designers, and sound recordists.

Once the script has been captured on tape, the editing process begins. After reviewing the footage and making notes of the best takes, you'll work with your peers to edit the raw material into an assembly of the film. Through a process of selection based on clear storytelling, pacing, acting performances, and special camera considerations, you'll work as team to trim the film and get feedback on the story from beginning to end. Sound effects, music, and special visual effects are added as "finishing touches" to make the film be the best it can be while meeting production deadlines. Finally, the finished film is burned to DVD and uploaded to the web for students to share.
